2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational Schedule Released By ESPN Events

ESPN Events released the schedule for the 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational presented by Wilson on Wednesday morning.

The 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational schedule was released Wednesday morning by ESPN Events and is presented by Wilson.

There will be 39 high-profile Division-I games played during the weekend of Feb. 13-16 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

Five of the 16 participating teams played in the 2019 Women's College World Series, including defending national champion UCLA, and 14 programs made the NCAA Tournament field.

Tickets for this event are sold out but you can be placed on the waitlist here. Single day passes will go on-sale in October.


Here are six games on the schedule that should have big crowds.

Alabama vs. Washington

Could there be a better game to end the first night of the weekend? We don't think so. Just picture Montana Fouts versus Gabbie Plain. After not playing one another last season, this could be a WCWS preview.

Minnesota vs. Oklahoma State

Happy Valentine's Day to softball fans everywhere. ESPN's gift is another potential WCWS matchup.

James Madison vs. Texas Tech

This is an intriguing game because both teams had a great 2019 season. The Dukes lost to UCLA in the Super Regional round and the Red Raiders lost to LSU in the if necessary game in Regionals. Texas Tech surpassed expectations last year and is looking to build on that.

Georgia vs. Northwestern

Does anyone remember how great this 2018 Regional Final was? We do! Northwestern is back and in a big way. Georgia will have to find out how to replace Alyssa DiCarlo but this definitely could be a fun game to watch.

Alabama vs. UCLA

Another gift to softball fans. We will just go ahead and thank the tournament directors right now.

Mizzou vs. Virginia Tech

This game will feature two of the best young players in the game. Virginia Tech's Darby Trull was named an SA All-American last season and Jazmyn Rollin was a finalist for Freshman Player of the Year.

  • Playing three prep seasons at Marist High School in Eugene, Ore., Doerr was named the 2019 4A Player of the Year and the Sky-Em Conference Player of the Year while also earning first team all-state honors
  • In 2018, she was named the Oregon Sports Award Softball Player of the Year and Mid-Western League Player of the Year, also earning first team all-state and all mid-western league accolades
  • She is ranked 41st in her class on the Extra Inning Elite 100 list.

HEMPHILL CLOSING IN ON UA CAREER HOME RUN RECORD, 200 RBIS
  • Senior Bailey Hemphill's 48 career home runs ranks fourth all-time and sits 12 behind Kelly Kretschman's (1998-2001) career record of 60
  • Hemphill hit nine home runs her freshman season, improved to 13 as a sophomore and tied the UA single-season record last season with 26
  • Hemphill also owns 175 career RBIs, putting her within striking distance of becoming the third Alabama player with 200 RBIs
  • Charlotte Morgan (2007-10) owns the UA record with 264 career RBIs and Kaila Hunt (2011-14) is the only other player to surpass 200, finishing with 215

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Alabama softball earned a pair of wins Thursday to open play at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, defeating Liberty 7-1 before posting an 8-0 shutout in five innings over top-ranked Washington.

Seven different players in the Alabama (3-3) starting lineup earned a hit in a balanced 7-1 win over Liberty (1-5) to start the day before the Crimson Tide posted a convincing 8-0 five-inning shutout over top-ranked Washington (6-1) in the nightcap. The win over the Huskies is Alabama's first run-rule shutout over the top-ranked team in the country and its first shutout of No. 1 since the 2017 NCAA Regional round vs. Minnesota.

Tide pitching was stingy in the circle on Thursday, with senior Krystal Goodman (1-0) allowing just one run in the win over the Flames before freshman Lexi Kilfoyl (2-2) held the top-ranked Huskies scoreless on just one hit and two walks with six strikeouts.

At the plate, sophomore Skylar Wallace paced the offense with a 4-for-7 day while juniors Kaylee Tow and KB Sides each had three hits, combining to score seven of the Tide's 15 runs. Freshman Abby Doerr made her Crimson Tide debut, blasting a home run against the Flames in her second career at-bat. Senior Bailey Hemphill sent one over the wall against the Huskies, pushing her career total to 49 which sits five shy of fourth-place Amanda Locke (2008-12).

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Alabama split its two games Friday at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, posting a 9-1 run rule victory over South Florida before falling to second-ranked UCLA, 7-0.

Alabama (4-3) and USF (0-6) played a tightly-contested three innings to start the day before a three-run home run from junior Kaylee Tow kickstarted the Crimson Tide offense in the fourth, eventually scoring five runs and then three more in the fifth to complete the run-rule victory. In the day's second game against No. 2 UCLA (6-0), the Bruins built an early four-run lead after two innings and sophomore Megan Faraimo limited Alabama to just two hits, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the 7-0 decision.

"I was really pleased by the bounce-back of Sarah Cornell against USF. She kept us in the game until Tow gave us some breathing room with her home run. We gave UCLA too many free opportunities early on and they took advantage of them. Whoever wins the battle of free passes usually comes away with the win."
