| FTBL A small update on Don'ta Hightower...

Staff
For you guys that visit the recruiting forum you'll remember the conversations Porter and I had a few times about our LB corps and what impact players might have when the arrive on campus this summer. (those that don't visit, you should more often  )

We speculated all along that there was a good chance we'd see a move with RM moving to the outside. Don'ta had an interesting comment about that during an interview this week.

He mentioned that he'd put on another 10lbs since last season which puts his weight at 260 going into the summer. He commented that the staff wanted has alluded to using him in the middle and sliding RM outside. He's bulked giving him the ability to take on interior offensive lineman and be able to hold his own.

One thing the staff encouraged him to do was work on footwork which he's been working on throughout his workouts.

He's a physical, strong guy but it's not just limited to him just hitting. If you saw his video's and read some of the reviews last fall and this spring you heard the phrase, "he's got a nose for ball." That's as much of a kid having football smarts and anything you can think of...get the "smarts" aspect down and then it turns into natural instinct.

Don'ta and a lot of our '08 class will begin arriving at the first of next month.

I can't say enough how excited I am to see this guy in Crimson. He should make a huge impact for us, and I figured he would make the move to the inside. He's got a real big frame for LB and all I can think is...FINALLY.

Everyone who keeps up with recruiting knows we landed the top class on both rivals and scout last year, but I still don't think it has completely sunk in on how good these guys are.

The amount of talent we signed in the front 7 on defense would have been enough to make a top 15 class alone. These guys are going to be green, but their athleticism is incredible. Hightower, Harris, Upshaw, Harbin, Square, Williams, Murphy, Billingsley and possibly Bolton or Jordan.

Great times are ahead!!

You guys stop with all this talk. I'm getting a bit excited!

This kind of talk hasn't been a reality for so long I had forgotten what it's like.

Isn't that the truth. I feel like I grew up in a decent era in the 90's, where we were competitive every year. Now that it's a possibility we can return to that time(maybe even higher), I'm not sure how I'm gonna feel. When we finally see some results on the field, I'm not gonna know how to react.

I can tell you one thing you'll feel.

Picture this...

We are down in the 4th quarter, late. We need another offensive possession to seal the game away. Yet, you aren't nervous. You know, the defense can handle the job at hand and we have the playmakers on offense to handle it as well.

I remember that clearly from Stallings and somewhat with Bryant.

If I haven't mentioned it 1000 times yet, this will bring me close to that number.

I love defensive football.

And that will be the best feeling. Having confidence in your team to get the job done. I can't count how many times I've felt uncertain going into a game or by the 4th quarter. The outlook on Alabama football is finally changing, and you won't find a happier fan base in the world.

You don't realize, or maybe you do, the effect we'll see around campus. Athletic donations will go through the roof. Enrollment will increase by leaps and bounds. Academic donations are going to rise. You'll literally see the landscape around the town change. In fact, it's already starting to with all the projects you are seeing being built.

If there is one thing you won't find a rival say...one that has visited the campus...are those jokes about trailer parks, etc... they are unfounded today, it'll be an embarrassing statement to their own fan base if they start with it.

You are about to witness the same thing that people witnessed in the early 50's and how they enjoyed the 60's.

Good times, my friend, good times.

I experienced the 70's as a child, the 80's as a teenager, the 90's as an young adult...looking forward to this decade.

I miss those days in the worst way. Just knowing you had the opportunity and players to get it done.
Didn't mean we would do it every time but we had a chance and it was a good one.

I'll confess, I turned the channel at times in the last few years in the 2nd half knowing where we were headed. Heck, walked out of the stadium in Jan of 2000 knowing Phlugner was going to miss that kick against Michigan. I hated doing it.

BUT, I can't remember turning off of many of the games in the 90's. Unless, it was to go somewhere else to watch the end of the game.

I'm not sure if any of us can understand the impact the next few years will carry. You're right, the landscape of Tuscaloosa is changing daily. I can name 3 building projects going on around campus off the top of my head, and there is still more to come. It's a perfect example of the football program moving ahead and into a better place. All I can say is Roll Tide and football season can't get here soon enough!!

Yes, I have. But, I was talking more along the commercial end of development. I posted a thread here a few weeks ago talking about the plans to put a major hotel/commercial/apartment complex along Wallace Wade where Denny Court Apartments, etc. are located.

Yeah I heard about that one too, have they made official plans for a date yet? Or is it still in the planning stages?

I'm not sure how to describe its progress. One thing we have to keep in mind is the point that a lot of that land is owned by the University so any further move on it would require BOT involvement. I know Dr. Witt is excited about the possibility.
