A few years ago I was talking with a few Gamecock fans and happened to use the term UofSC when referring to South Carolina on the national stage. Boy howdy, did they take that as an insult. The "troll" term came to its own light that day on what I considered to be a simple acronym to distinguish between USC and South Carolina.

In case you missed it, South Carolina started discussing the change about two years ago and "officially" announced it over the winter. They finally realized there is only one USC.

That's what started the original fight - how could USCw put a claim on "USC" when their state didn't exist when USCe was founded?

I prefer Southern Cal and South Carolina, it's how I refer to them both. The "w" and "e" to look silly to me.
