Crimson Tide welcome three of the top prep players in the Southeast to make up one of the top men’s golf signing classes in the nation

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama men's golf head coach Jay Seawell announced the addition of three standout prep golfers who have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Crimson Tide for the 2018-19 season. The trio of Tyler Lipscomb (Carrolton, Ga.), Thomas Ponder (Dothan, Ala.) and Simms Abney (Madison, Miss.) have signed National Letters of Intent to become the newest members of the Alabama men's golf program.

"I am really excited about the three guys in our 2019 class," Seawell said. "First off, they are very talented and will be great additions to our program. They are guys that fit what the Alabama golf program is all about. They have high character, are great students and love to compete. They have developed a close friendship throughout the recruiting process and will be great teammates. I look forward to helping them develop and watching them grow and helping us compete for championships."

Lipscomb was named a 2018 Rolex Junior All-American who is currently ranked as the No. 39 junior golfer in the nation … was named a three-time All-State honoree … earned back-to-back Georgia state individual champion, winning AA classification as a freshman and AAA his sophomore season … also finished state runner up as a junior … captured medalist honors at the 2018 AJGA Junior with a 241 (69-71-71) … won the Central Lion medalist honor that included a tournament record single round of 65 … also claimed medalist honors at the AAA Georgia High School Region Championship and the Gordon Lee High School Invitational … was the 2017 and 2018 Carrollton Cup Georgia PGA Club Junior Championship … recorded a low tournament round of 59 which he shot during the Callaway Gardens Pro/Junior Championship … has recorded a hole-in-one on five separate occasions.

"Tyler has tremendous speed in his golf swing," Seawell said. "He matches the golfers of today as a tall athletic player."

Ranked No. 86 in the Rolex AJGA Junior Rankings … a two-time AHSAA Class 3A individual state champion (2017 and 2018) who is the fourth-ranked junior in the state of Alabama … ended this past season at Providence Christian as he carded a two-day total of 139 (69-70) with just one bogey while winning the AHSAA Class 3A state title for the second straight year … behind his efforts, Providence finished as the 2018 Class 3A state runner-up behind city rival Houston Academy … named the Dothan Eagle Golfer of the Year for three consecutive seasons (2016-18) … a quarterfinalist at the United States Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship … finished ninth at the 2018 Future Masters … owned a 71.06 stroke average for the season, but shot a blistering 67.5 average in the postseason, highlighted by an AHSAA state-tying record 62 at the Class 3A South Sectionals … had an even par or under par score in 13 of his 19 rounds, including under par in all four postseason rounds.

"I have known Thomas for a very longtime," Seawell said. "He has been part of our camp since he was 10 years old. I have enjoyed watching him develop into a great player over the years. He is an incredible competitor who does not back down under pressure."

Ranked No. 79 golfer in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Mississippi by the Junior Golf by the Rolex AJGA Junior Rankings … helped lead Jackson Prep to four state championships, including three consecutive (2014, 2016-18) and a runner-up finish in 2015 … a four-time all-state performer, earning first team honors in each of the last two years (2017 and 2018) … named the Clarion Ledger Mississippi boys golf Player of the Year in 2018 … won six individual high school tournaments in his career … claimed medalist honors at the 2018 Mississippi Junior Amateur Championship in which he set the 54-hole record for scoring and largest margin of victory, finishing the event tournament score of 16-under 200 (71-64-65), winning by 10 strokes over the field … secured the individual title at the E-Z-Go Vaughn Taylor Championship with a 9-under par 207 (73-68-66) … won the Hampton Cove Junior Classic with a 143 – one of three top-five finishes on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour … set the 54-hole record when he won the 2017 AJGA David Toms championship … also earned a spot on the academic honor roll in each of his three years in high school (2016-18).

"Simms is a great student of the game," Seawell said. "He is a player who knows how to finish if he is anywhere around the top of the leaderboard."
