From the beginning, the Jack Russell terrier has been bred for brains, hunting ability, independence and companionship. These dogs are suitable pets for most situations, where some outdoor activity takes place. They are not suitable as an apartment dog - where he is walked on a leash as his only exercise. Hunting and running is their love. A tennis ball thrown as far as it can be thrown, never loses its thrill - the chase, the efforts to kill it and the expectancy of another throw! They are , by nature a "go-to-ground" dog. They have been bred to go into a hole and "mark" the game ( by barking, scratching, etc.). Although they are not expected to kill the hunted game, they must be strong and feisty to protect themselves against animals such as the badger, raccoon, groundhog, etc. and to be able to kill them only if necessary.

Why are they so popular as a pet? It is because they are schizophrenic! In the house they can be a love, a charmer, an entertainer with a great sense of humor, a co-operative member of the household, a babysitter, and a sick in bed comforter and consoler. If he is properly brought up, he is beautifully behaved -- full of personality and character. But outside, when hunting, they become another animal you wouldn't dare let your baby get anywhere near! He is not only courageous beyond their ability, but he is deliriously happy the minute he senses game afoot. Their tenacity and willingness to return to the attack will continue until they are stopped by their handler or its adversary drop from exhaustion. Myself, I think their popularity has risen from TV shows like Frasier and Wishbone, but what do I know. Here are some of the pros and cons of owning a Jack Russell!
