Alabama Spring Camp- Day 6 (Video and Notes)

March 31, 2009

Running Backs:

  • While Roy Upchurch still remains in a black jersey (no contact) he continues to participate in drills.
  • Mark Ingram, if the team were to play this weekend, looks to be the player that would featured running back.  Matchett, on Monday, took the majority of the snaps in the #2 role.

Quarterbacks:

  • Any thoughts, other than videos that of drills, on how the Quarterback “battle” is progressing is just that, mere thoughts.  With every observation period this spring Greg McElroy and Star Jackson have spent time throwing short routes to the Wide Receivers corps and the Tight Ends.
  • As reported with this series of spring recaps, John Michael Boswell is continuing to work at the right guard position.  While the intent of spring camp isn’t wholly to determine the starting lineup for the fall season, it certainly appears that Boswell is settling in at the position.
  • There continues to be a lot of rotation along the offensive line between positions and administrative groupings.  One coach observed from last weekend, “our offensive line is either struggling or the defensive line is just that good.”  I firmly am becoming to believe it’s the latter of the two.
  • Carpenter is also settling into the first administrative group at left tackle which has allowed Drew Davis to remain at the position he manned last year on the right side.

Defense:

  • As the Tide draws near to the mid-point of spring camp neither Prince Hall or Brandon Fanney have practiced with the Tide.
  • Fanney’s suspension has allowed several players to practice at the JACK linebacker position.  As of late, Eryk Anders has been getting the majority of the reps with the first administrative group.  Anders, who really began to emerge in the second half of last season, brings a very different presence to that position.
  • As expected due to spending almost a year outside of football, Kerry Murphy is continuing to adjust to the the rigors of Div. 1 defense- slowly but surely.
  • The defensive staff continues to experiment with where Dont’a Hightower will line up this fall.  He’s seen practice time at the JACK and Will (weakside) positions this spring.
  • Last season, Coach Saban commented that Cory Reamer was a player that could play either on the outside or inside linebacker position.  With the experiments with Hightower, Reamer has also taken some of the reps at the SAM (strong side) linebacker position.
  • The shuffles also continue with the defensive secondary with B.J. Scott and Robby Green.  Monday, Scott was back with the cornerbacks while Green was working with the safeties.

The Tide will hold its first scrimmage of the spring Wednesday. We’ll have reports, video and other details following the afternoon session.
