General Stories About Hunting 3. Opening Day 4. Season Ends 5. Bo's Actual Deer Hunts Actual Turkey Hunts 1."If You Have Him Hollerin' Don't Start Follerin'." |
Big Bad Mama Jama About 10 years ago I was hunting over a draw through a vast clearcut. There was a small creek running in the bottom that had alot of honeysuckle & brier that were being absolutely destroyed by deer. I had found a few better-than-average rubs & set my stand up for an evening hunt. Right after the sun set & the colors of the day started fading to grey, I saw 2 deer feeding up the draw. They were 2 doe & they were feeding , but they both looked very nervous with the bigger of the two frequently looking behind her. I just knew big boy would be tailing them. About 5 minutes after these 2 fed through the area & out Of site, a big bodied deer came running in - nose to the ground! But it was too dark for me to make out his rack. (Remember, I was younger & was hunting in Central Alabama where no tag was required.) Needless to say, I 'ground-checked' him for meat & the hopes for a nice rack. It turned out to be a live weight 185# doe... no lie. By far the biggest doe I've ever shot down here. The sad part is she had just been mounted. Can you imagine the bull that tamed that big girl? Can you imagine the size offspring that would have been produced? I have not 'ground-checked' a deer since then. If big boy slips by me at dusk, that's just fine with me. Written By Donny McCaa
